Ethical Trading

BerryWorld is a strong supporter of ethical trading practices and we positively encourage our growers, suppliers and packers to implement these practices in their own businesses.

To this end we have developed our own code of practice to incorporate our customers' requirements as well as the key elements of the ETI (Ethical Trading Initiative) Base Code and the ILO (International Labour Organisation) conventions which are communicated to our growers, suppliers and packers.

This code covers :-

  • Freedom to choose employment.
  • Freedom of association and unions.
  • Safe and Hygienic working conditions.
  • Young workers and their protection.
  • Wages and Hours of work.
  • Discrimination and Disciplinary procedures.
  • Right to Work and Legality of labour.
  • Environmental issues.
  • Fair Trade terms.
  • Animal welfare.

Also BerryWorld are members of the SEDEX (Social and Ethical Data Exchange) internet based information system. This facility allows suppliers and packers to enter information about their working practices which can be viewed by BerryWorld and its customers. More information on SEDEX can be found on www.sedex.org.uk.

Finally BerryWorld initiate independent audits of suppliers and packers by respected auditing companies to assess their compliance with the BerryWorld Ethical code of practice. These audits allow us to identify areas for further improvement as well as identifying positive policies that suppliers and packers have implemented in their businesses over and above the requirements of the codes of practice and conventions.
